Cutting The Cord: Wireless Connections Music To Your
Ears
NEW YORK (CBS) Turn it up! I’m not embarrassed to admit, but it seems these days I’ve got more music on my computer (some 35 Gigabytes, or about 32 days of back-to-back hits) than I do on Compact Disc. In fact, I only have a DVD player for playing CD’s, not even a disc changer, but I like it like that. I can build my own playlists to fit my mood that can span literally thousands of songs, with no “quiet time” between tracks while the changer finds the next cut. One thing I’ve come up against, though, is getting my music from my computer to my stereo—some 400+ feet away from each other. The solution, new gadgets from Macsense that connect to your home network—and more importantly your computer—to stream your music back to your stereo. Macsense HomePod The HomePod—which as its name may suggest looks similar to the iPod—is roughly the size of a DVD case. It sits upright, and has a bright 2-inch LCD display on the front, as well as controls. The HomePod is as easy to set up as the Squeezebox, yet the included software (Which works with Windows and Macs) seems a bit rough around the edges; however, its easy enough to get to work. The output options are the same as Squeezebox, RCA jacks as well as coaxial and digital optical. The HomePod also includes an FM tuner, as well as small speakers up front—so you can put it in places without a stereo set up, like the kitchen or even a bathroom and still enjoy your tunes. Getting the HomePod to work is simple, but for some connection settings you need to use a web-tool, which can make it a challenge for some entry-level users. Once set-up, you can navigate and playback tunes using the controls on the front of the unit, or the pint-sized remote control.
