Solution:

Cable providers that assign dynamic IP addresses want to identify connected computers in some fashion, to prevent extra computers from being connected to their networks and depleting their pool of available IP addresses. MediaOne does this by registering the MAC (Media Access Control) address (aka "hardware address") of the computer's ethernet interface. In order to allow our XRouter Pro to work, MediaOne will need to switch service from the MAC address of the computer's ethernet card to the MAC address of the XRouter Pro.  The XRouter Pro's public MAC address can be found on its One Page Setup, printed just to the right of "Public IP Address". It will be a series of numbers in the format of 00-A0-4B-XX-XX-XX. Please note that this step requires a telephone call from the end-user to MediaOne.

After MediaOne has confirmed that service has been switched to the new MAC address, a specific power-up sequence will be needed to establish the first connection. Turn off power to your computer, the XRouter Pro, and the cablemodem. Power them back up in the order of cablemodem first (let it negotiate a connection with MediaOne), then XRouter Pro, then computer. Once your computer has finished booting up, you should be online.
