My ISP uses PPPoE (PPP over Ethernet), and I just canít seem to get
it to work with my MIH130 XRouter

PPPoE is a protocol whereby the "always on" xDSL or cable service provided to you by your ISP is bastardized into a phony dial-up style account which requires a username and password to establish a connection to the internet. In situations where there is a single computer connected directly to the internet, the PPPoE connection is managed by software (WinPoet, MacPoet, Enternet, Access Manager) installed directly on the machine. This software has the task of remembering your username and password, establishing and breaking the connection with the ISP, and giving you information about your connection status. PPPoE is not easily networkable, as the Access Manager program is not able to authenticate with the PPPoE server through the router.
Does my ISP use PPPoE?
Some ISP's that are known to use PPPoE are Earthlink/Mindspring, Pacific Bell, BellAtlantic, BellSouth, and BellSympatico (Canada). There may be others as well.
Will PPPoE work with my MIH130 XRouter Pro?
Yes, the XRouter Pro will work with PPPoE. This problem is solved by taking the Access Manager program and putting it into the router itself.
In the Advanced Menu on the left-hand side of the screen there is a link
labeled PPPoE. Under this section, you will have the ability to enable PPPoE support, enter your PPPoE username and password, and enable the "Connect on Demand" feature. "Connect on Demand" automates the PPPoE login process; any TCP/IP request for data outside the LAN (Local Area Network) will cause the router to connect to the ISP.
Please note that with the XRouter Pro connecting your LAN to the ISP, you will not be using your existing PPPoE software at all.
Step-by-step configuration instructions
- Access XRouter Pro's configuration page.
- Make sure One Page Setup is set for router to obtain IP address automatically from ISP.
- Select "PPPoE" from the Advanced menu.
- Enable PPPoE support
- Enter username and password as provided by your ISP. Please double-check these.
- Leave "Service Name" blank.
- Enable "Connect on Demand".
- Apply settings, but do not "Finish Settings and Quit"
- Click on "PPPoE" under the Advanced menu again.
- Click the Connect button shown on the PPPoE configuration page. (Again do not "Finish Settings and Quit".)
- Select "Status Monitor" from Advanced menu. Check to see if you have been assigned a public IP address.
- If you have a public IP address other than 0.0.0.0, this means that PPPoE is working correctly.
- Look in Status Monitor for Domain Name Server #1 and #2. Write down these IP addresses.
- Enter these Domain Name Server addresses in XRouter Pro's One Page Setup.
- Reboot computers.
If your public IP address remains 0.0.0.0 after doing all of these steps, there are two things you should check for:
- Verify that the DSL modem is on and working properly. Can you connect to the internet directly, bypassing the
XRouter Pro? If not, your DSL is either down or you have a bad ethernet cable (or modem, for that matter). If one computer does connect to the internet with no problem, verify that the DSL modem is properly connected to the WAN port on the
XRouter Pro, and that the green WAN link light is lit.
- Double-check your PPPoE username and password. Some versions of PPPoE access manager software are customized by ISP's, and you may have to modify your username somewhat. For example, if the username you type into your access manager is "example", you may have to enter
"email@example.com" into the
XRouter Pro's username field, where "myisp.com" is your ISP's domain name. If your DSL account is through Earthlink, your username should be in the format of "ELNfirstname.lastname@example.org".
